Who is Trauma Counseling for?
Trauma counseling is for people of all ages and experiences. Our expertise in helping those with trauma include events occurring in both childhood and in adulthood, involving emotional, physical, and sexual abuse, as well as other life-threatening events like car accidents, military-related trauma, and other acts of violence.
We are trained in research-based trauma and cognitive processing therapies. If you are seeking to process trauma, reach out to Acacia to start PTSD therapy in North Carolina.
Why is it so hard to move on from traumatic experiences?
We understand you are unknowingly trying to fit your ideas about the trauma you experienced with your pre-existing ideas about yourself, others, and the world. Many times these ideas do not fit together and the tension from that causes the brain to continue to re-experience the trauma.
Once you are feeling safe, both in therapy and outside of therapy, we will explore your experience of trauma and find a way to successfully integrate the events into your history, as you will no longer need to rely on avoidance of reminders of the events to cope with your everyday life.
How Does Therapy Work?
Trauma therapy is a structured, collaborative process designed to help you feel safe, understand your experiences, and integrate them over time.
-
Intake:
We begin with an initial conversation to understand what brings you to therapy, your current concerns, and your goals for treatment. -
Assessment:
We explore your history, symptoms, and patterns of distress to better understand how trauma may be impacting your thoughts, emotions, and body. -
Treatment:
Using a trauma-informed approach, we work at a pace that prioritizes safety while addressing traumatic memories and emotional responses. -
Integration:
As symptoms improve, we focus on helping you integrate traumatic experiences into your life story in a way that reduces distress and avoidance. -
Follow-Up / Intensives:
Ongoing sessions or focused therapeutic intensives may be used to deepen progress and support long-term stability and growth.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if I have unresolved trauma?
Unresolved trauma may show up as intrusive thoughts, emotional reactivity, avoidance of reminders, difficulty trusting others, or feeling “stuck” in patterns that are hard to change.
What happens in trauma therapy?
Trauma therapy begins with building safety and understanding your experiences. Over time, we work to process traumatic memories, reduce emotional distress, and help you integrate what happened so it feels less overwhelming in your daily life.
Will I have to talk about my trauma in detail right away?
No. Trauma therapy moves at your pace. Early sessions focus on stabilization, trust-building, and coping skills before any detailed processing of traumatic experiences occurs.
How long does trauma therapy take?
The length of therapy varies depending on your history, symptoms, and goals. Some people benefit from short-term focused work, while others engage in longer-term therapy to fully process and integrate trauma experiences.
