Social media can have real consequential effects on your moods and thoughts. Being aware of this is the first step to mitigating the negative effects on yourself. Some of the negative effects include comparing yourself to unrealistic expectations resulting in lower self-esteem, being dissatisfied with the body you’re in, or doom-scrolling a rabbit hole of triggering posts. Spending too much time in this headspace can result in negative thoughts that last even after you log out.

Here are some tips for keeping social media from negatively affecting your thoughts and confidence:

  1. Take a break when needed
  2. Be mindful of who you follow and how their posts make you feel
  3. Be aware of which social media platforms make you feel better or worse
  4. Be mindful of how much time you spend on social media. A complete social media cut off may not be necessary, but a time limit cap can be helpful.
  5. Don’t be afraid to curate your feed to only people and content that make you feel good – even if that means unfollowing (or Muting) friends or family members.
