When the weight of life feels heavier than it should
You might not think of yourself as someone who “needs therapy.”
But there may be moments where stress, frustration, or past experiences start affecting your daily life. You might notice:
Feeling irritable or more on edge than usual
Avoiding emotional conversations or bottling up feelings
Struggling with work-life balance, relationships, or self-esteem
Carrying unresolved guilt, shame, or regret from the past
That old memories or experiences still influence your reactions
When Stress and Old Patterns Don’t Let Go
Our brains are designed to process difficult experiences so we can move forward.
Yet many men grow up learning to “tough it out,” which can make it harder to process emotions or past challenges fully. This can lead to patterns like:
Feeling anxious, angry, or disconnected in certain situations
Negative self-beliefs or doubts about your abilities the past
Repeating relationship patterns you wish you could change
Avoiding or shutting down emotionally when challenges arise
A Different Approach to Men’s Therapy
Men’s therapy provides a safe space to explore emotions and experiences that might feel hard to talk about elsewhere.
Whether using EMDR, talk therapy, or a combination of approaches, therapy helps you:
-
Process past experiences without being overwhelmed by them
-
Build healthier ways to manage stress and emotions
-
Improve relationships with partners, friends, and family
-
Strengthen self-awareness, confidence, and resilience
Getting Started Is Easy
STEP ONE: CONTACT US
At any point in your decision to pursue therapy or assessment, feel free to contact us with questions. We will gladly talk with you over the phone to determine if one of us will be a good fit. Visit our Contact Page.
STEP TWO: INTAKE
Once you have scheduled an appointment, you will be emailed forms to complete electronically prior to your first appointment. If we are in-network with your Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, or State Health Plan insurance benefits will be processed.
STEP THREE: FIRST SESSION
Your first appointment will be 60 minutes. In this first appointment, we will discuss what brought you in, your history, and will develop a “game plan” with you to work toward your goals.
Why Consider Men’s Therapy?
You don’t need to have everything figured out to start. Many men begin therapy simply because life feels heavier than it should or old patterns keep resurfacing.
Men’s therapy is a space to:
-
Be heard without judgment
-
Understand emotional and behavioral patterns
-
Build practical skills for managing stress and relationships
If you’re curious about therapy or want to explore if it’s right for you, you’re welcome to contact Acacia Collaborative.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you take insurance?
Most providers at Acacia are in-network with most Aetna and BCBS plans and the NC State Health Plan. We do not accept UNC Health Alliance & our psychological and psychoeducational evaluations are out of network.
For other insurance providers, we provide everything you need to easily file with your insurance, including an insurance “super bill” or statement of services and a link to your claim form. We are also happy to reach out to your insurance company, with your permission, if you would find that helpful.
I’m in the process of shopping for a therapist, is there a way for me to speak with one of you to see if we are a good fit before committing to working with you?
Yes! “Fit” with your therapist is the most important element that makes therapy work (according to studies, even more important than training or length of experience!). Thus, we prioritize making this part very easy for you.
There are some things that are bothering me, but also some things I specifically don't want to talk about. Is that ok?
Absolutely. At Acacia Collaborative, we “meet you where you are.” This means that we do not force you to talk about topics you are not ready to discuss or do not feel are relevant. We are trained at various levels of “depth” of treatment and believe there is no one “right” way to be in therapy.
While most people do choose to have weekly sessions for the first few months, we are flexible about how often and how long you would like your sessions to be. We will offer suggestions, but ultimately, it is your decision about what you would like to get out of therapy.
What can I expect in my first men’s therapy session?
Your first session is a chance to talk about what brought you to therapy, share your history, and discuss your goals. The therapist will listen without judgment and work with you to create a personalized plan. You don’t need to have everything figured out, just come ready to start exploring what matters to you.
Is men’s therapy different from regular therapy?
Men’s therapy isn’t about a completely different approach, it’s about creating a space that understands the unique pressures men face. Therapists focus on helping men process emotions, develop coping skills, and address patterns that might be harder to discuss elsewhere, all while respecting your pace and comfort level.
