You Don’t Have To Walk The Journey of Healing Your Heart Alone
What kind of therapist is best for grief?
For many people, losing someone is the most intense pain you will ever feel. Sometimes the “someone” is not even someone you have ever met, for example, in the experiences of infertility and pregnancy loss. Sometimes the loss is a marriage that has ended, a dream that has not come true, a career never fulfilled, or partner never found. Sometimes the loss is about having a parent who did not act in a way that led you to feel safe and secure. Whatever type of grief you are burdened by, starting grief counseling in Raleigh, NC at Acacia is the best place to work with a grief specialist.
How long should you wait to go to grief counseling?
There’s no right or wrong time to start grief counseling. Some people benefit from support within days or weeks of a loss, while others seek therapy months or even years later—especially if grief feels stuck or overwhelming.
You might consider going to grief counseling if:
- You’re having trouble functioning in daily life
- Emotions feel too heavy to manage alone
- You feel isolated or unsupported
- You want a safe place to talk without judgment
- It’s been months (or years), and grief still feels unresolved or complicated
Ultimately, you don’t need to wait for things to get worse. If you’re hurting, support is available now.

What are the 3 C’s of grief?
The 3 C’s of grief are a gentle framework to help people navigate loss:
Choose: Give yourself permission to grieve in your own way. You get to choose what feels supportive—whether that’s talking, journaling, crying, or simply being quiet.
Connect: Grief can be isolating. Connecting with others—friends, family, support groups, or a therapist—can remind you that you’re not alone.
Communicate: Talk about your loved one, your memories, and your emotions. Naming what you’re feeling helps process the pain and invites healing.
These “C’s” aren’t tasks to complete, but supportive guideposts when navigating the fog of loss.
What type of therapy is best for bereavement?
The most effective type of therapy for bereavement depends on the person and the nature of the loss, but some widely supported approaches include:
-
Grief Counseling: Provides space to process loss, honor your loved one, and adjust to life after death.
-
Complicated Grief Therapy (CGT): A structured approach used when grief remains intense and disruptive long after the loss.
-
Narrative Therapy: Helps you tell and reshape the story of your relationship and loss in meaningful, healing ways.
-
Existential Therapy: Explores deep themes like purpose, meaning, and mortality that often arise in grief.
-
EMDR (for traumatic grief): Can help reprocess painful images, unresolved emotions, or sudden, traumatic losses.
-
Support Groups: While not therapy in the traditional sense, group support can be deeply healing, especially when shared with others who truly understand.
The most important factor is working with someone who allows space for grief in all its forms—without rushing, judging, or minimizing your experience.
Can grief counseling help with traumatic grief?
Yes. Therapies such as EMDR and trauma-informed counseling can help process traumatic grief experiences, distressing memories, and overwhelming emotional responses.
When should someone start grief counseling?
There is no “right” time to begin grief counseling. Some people seek support immediately after a loss, while others begin therapy months or years later when grief continues to feel overwhelming or unresolved.

QUESTIONS
Learn more about Acacia Collaborative & Therapeutic Services.
Are you in-network with my insurance?
Most providers at Acacia are in-network with most Aetna and BCBS plans and the NC State Health Plan. We also accept the following Medicaid plans: Healthy Blue, Carolina Complete, and Wellcare. Additionally, we accept Blue Home with UNC Health Alliance. Our psychological and psychoeducational evaluations are out of network.
For other insurance providers, we provide everything you need to easily file with your insurance, including an insurance “super bill” or statement of services and a link to your claim form. We are also happy to reach out to your insurance company, with your permission, if you would find that helpful.
There are some things that are bothering me, but also some things I specifically don't want to talk about. Is that ok?
Absolutely. At Acacia Collaborative, we “meet you where you are.” This means that we do not force you to talk about topics you are not ready to discuss or do not feel are relevant. We are trained at various levels of “depth” of treatment and believe there is no one “right” way to be in therapy.
While most people do choose to have weekly sessions for the first few months, we are flexible about how often and how long you would like your sessions to be. We will offer suggestions, but ultimately, it is your decision about what you would like to get out of therapy.
I’m in the process of shopping for a therapist, is there a way for me to speak with one of you to see if we are a good fit before committing to working with you?
Yes, absolutely. Finding the right fit with a therapist is one of the most important factors in whether therapy actually helps, so we want to make that easy for you. At Acacia, we call these consult calls: a brief, no-pressure phone conversation where you can ask questions, share a little about what's bringing you to therapy, and get a feel for whether one of our therapists might be the right match. There's no obligation to move forward afterward.
If you're interested in scheduling one, just let us know and we'll get you connected.
