You Don’t Have To Walk The Journey of Healing Your Heart Alone

What kind of therapy is best for grief?

For many people, losing someone is the most intense pain you will ever feel. Sometimes the “someone” is not even someone you have ever met, for example, in the experiences of infertility and pregnancy loss. Sometimes the loss is a marriage that has ended, a dream that has not come true, a career never fulfilled, or partner never found. Sometimes the loss is about having a parent who did not act in a way that led you to feel safe and secure. Whatever type of grief you are burdened by, starting grief counseling in Durham, NC or Cary, NC at Acacia is the best place to work with a grief specialist.

How long should you wait to go to grief counseling?

There’s no right or wrong time to start grief counseling. Some people benefit from support within days or weeks of a loss, while others seek therapy months or even years later—especially if grief feels stuck or overwhelming.

You might consider going to grief counseling if:

  • You’re having trouble functioning in daily life
  • Emotions feel too heavy to manage alone
  • You feel isolated or unsupported
  • You want a safe place to talk without judgment
  • It’s been months (or years), and grief still feels unresolved or complicated

Ultimately, you don’t need to wait for things to get worse. If you’re hurting, support is available now.

What are the 3 C’s of grief?

The 3 C’s of grief are a gentle framework to help people navigate loss:

Choose: Give yourself permission to grieve in your own way. You get to choose what feels supportive—whether that’s talking, journaling, crying, or simply being quiet.

Connect: Grief can be isolating. Connecting with others—friends, family, support groups, or a therapist—can remind you that you’re not alone.

Communicate: Talk about your loved one, your memories, and your emotions. Naming what you’re feeling helps process the pain and invites healing.

These “C’s” aren’t tasks to complete, but supportive guideposts when navigating the fog of loss.

What type of therapy is best for bereavement?

The most effective type of therapy for bereavement depends on the person and the nature of the loss, but some widely supported approaches include:

  • Grief Counseling: Provides space to process loss, honor your loved one, and adjust to life after death.

  • Complicated Grief Therapy (CGT): A structured approach used when grief remains intense and disruptive long after the loss.

  • Narrative Therapy: Helps you tell and reshape the story of your relationship and loss in meaningful, healing ways.

  • Existential Therapy: Explores deep themes like purpose, meaning, and mortality that often arise in grief.

  • EMDR (for traumatic grief): Can help reprocess painful images, unresolved emotions, or sudden, traumatic losses.

  • Support Groups: While not therapy in the traditional sense, group support can be deeply healing, especially when shared with others who truly understand.

The most important factor is working with someone who allows space for grief in all its forms—without rushing, judging, or minimizing your experience.

How Therapy Works

1. Reach Out: Call or email at any point in your decision to pursue therapy. There is no pressure to have the words for what you are feeling before getting in touch.

2. Intake: Once an appointment is scheduled, electronic forms are sent to complete before your first session. Insurance benefits are confirmed and processed at this stage.

3. First Session (60 Minutes): Your first appointment covers what brought you in, your experience of loss, and the development of a personalized treatment plan. You will never be pushed to share more than you are ready to.

4. Making Space for Your Grief: Early sessions focus on giving you room to feel the full weight of your loss without judgment, pressure to move on, or fear of burdening others. The pace is always yours to set.

5. Active Grief Work: Using approaches such as Grief Counseling, Complicated Grief Therapy, Narrative Therapy, Existential Therapy, or EMDR for traumatic grief, your therapist works with you toward meaningful goals that support healing while honoring what was lost.

6. Addressing Stuck Points: If grief has become prolonged or complicated, your therapist identifies the patterns maintaining your pain and works with you to shift them when you feel ready.

7. Ongoing Support: Session frequency is adjusted as you progress, with flexible scheduling available at the Durham office and via telehealth throughout your healing journey.
