What is EMDR therapy and how does it work?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a trauma-focused therapy that helps people heal from distressing experiences by allowing the brain to process them in a more adaptive, less emotionally charged way. It’s based on the idea that trauma or overwhelming experiences can get “stuck” in the nervous system, causing distress long after the event.
How it works:
-
The therapist helps you identify a memory or issue that still causes distress.
-
While you focus on the memory, the therapist guides you through bilateral stimulation (usually side-to-side eye movements, tapping, or sound).
-
This stimulation helps the brain “reprocess” the memory—reducing emotional intensity and shifting negative beliefs (like “I’m not safe” or “It was my fault”) into healthier, more accurate ones.
Over time, people report that these memories become less painful and stop interfering with daily life.
Do I have to talk about the trauma in detail?
No. EMDR therapy can often be effective without fully disclosing every detail of the traumatic experience.
Your therapist will work at a pace that feels safe and manageable for you.

What disorder is EMDR most commonly used to treat?
EMDR is most commonly used to treat Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and other trauma-related conditions. It’s one of the most evidence-based and widely recommended treatments for trauma.
It’s also been shown to help with:
- Anxiety and panic disorders
- Childhood trauma and emotional neglect
- Depression
- Phobias
- Grief and complicated loss
- Performance anxiety
- Some chronic pain or psychosomatic symptoms
EMDR doesn’t erase memories—it helps your brain file them away so they no longer feel like they’re happening now.
Is There EMDR therapy in Raleigh NC?
Yes, EMDR can be done in-person by our Durham or Cary EMDR therapists or online anywhere in North Carolina—and many therapists have adapted it successfully for virtual care. When done online, instead of tracking finger movements in person, therapists use:
-
On-screen visuals (dots or lights moving left to right)
-
Audio tones alternating in headphones
-
Tapping or buzzers through guided instruction
Online EMDR is effective and safe when conducted by a trained EMDR therapist using secure, HIPAA-compliant platforms. For many clients, virtual sessions also feel more comfortable and convenient, especially when dealing with anxiety or trauma.
Who is EMDR not appropriate for?
EMDR may not be suitable in some situations, especially if a client:
- Is currently highly unstable (e.g., severe dissociation, psychosis, or suicidal crisis)
- Has untreated substance dependence that disrupts focus or memory
- Lacks basic emotional regulation skills (e.g., grounding, self-soothing)
- Has serious heart conditions or neurological concerns (discussed on a case-by-case basis)
However, many therapists begin with preparation and stabilization work before starting EMDR to make sure it’s safe and supportive. A trauma-informed provider can assess whether it’s a good fit and will never force or rush the process.

Learn more about Acacia Collaborative & Therapeutic Services.
Are you in-network with my insurance?
Most providers at Acacia are in-network with most Aetna and BCBS plans and the NC State Health Plan. We also accept the following Medicaid plans: Healthy Blue, Carolina Complete, and Wellcare. Additionally, we accept Blue Home with UNC Health Alliance. Our psychological and psychoeducational evaluations are out of network.
For other insurance providers, we provide everything you need to easily file with your insurance, including an insurance “super bill” or statement of services and a link to your claim form. We are also happy to reach out to your insurance company, with your permission, if you would find that helpful.
There are some things that are bothering me, but also some things I specifically don't want to talk about. Is that ok?
Absolutely. At Acacia Collaborative, we “meet you where you are.” This means that we do not force you to talk about topics you are not ready to discuss or do not feel are relevant. We are trained at various levels of “depth” of treatment and believe there is no one “right” way to be in therapy.
While most people do choose to have weekly sessions for the first few months, we are flexible about how often and how long you would like your sessions to be. We will offer suggestions, but ultimately, it is your decision about what you would like to get out of therapy.
I’m in the process of shopping for a therapist, is there a way for me to speak with one of you to see if we are a good fit before committing to working with you?
Yes, absolutely. Finding the right fit with a therapist is one of the most important factors in whether therapy actually helps, so we want to make that easy for you. At Acacia, we call these consult calls: a brief, no-pressure phone conversation where you can ask questions, share a little about what's bringing you to therapy, and get a feel for whether one of our therapists might be the right match. There's no obligation to move forward afterward.
If you're interested in scheduling one, just let us know and we'll get you connected.
