What is ADHD testing?
ADHD testing is a comprehensive evaluation used to determine whether attention difficulties, hyperactivity, or impulsivity meet the clinical criteria for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). At Acacia Collaborative, ADHD testing combines a clinical interview, standardized rating scales, and computerized continuous performance testing to measure attention and impulse control. This gives you a clear, evidence-based answer, along with a personalized plan for what to do next.
If constant distraction, disorganization, or trouble finishing what you start have started to feel bigger than “just being busy,” testing can help you understand what’s actually going on, and what will help.
Signs it might be time for ADHD testing
You don’t need to have every symptom on a checklist to benefit from testing.
Common reasons people reach out include:
- Ongoing trouble focusing, finishing tasks, or following through on plans
- Feeling restless, easily distracted, or “everywhere at once”
- Struggling with time management, deadlines, or organization at work or school
- A teacher, doctor, or therapist has suggested an evaluation
- You were diagnosed as a child and want to know if it still fits now
- You suspect ADHD but were never formally assessed, especially common in women and adults who learned to mask symptoms
Many adults living with undiagnosed ADHD spend years attributing their struggles to character or effort. An accurate diagnosis can be the turning point that finally makes sense of it.
ADHD testing for children, teens, and adults
Children & school-age testing:
Evaluation typically includes parent and teacher rating scales, behavioral observation, and a review of academic performance.
Testing can help identify whether ADHD, a learning difference, or another factor is contributing to challenges at school, and can support requests for an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) or 504 accommodations.
Teens: The process mirrors adult evaluation, adding input from parents and teachers alongside the teen’s own report, with attention to how academic pressure and social demands are affected.
Adults: Diagnosis in adulthood relies more heavily on self-report, developmental history, and, where available, input from someone who has known you a long time. Testing can also help rule out overlapping conditions like anxiety or depression that can look similar to ADHD on the surface.
What’s included in an ADHD evaluation at Acacia Collaborative
- Consultation call. A complimentary call to understand your concerns and determine the right testing plan.
- Clinical interview. We gather developmental, academic, and health history, along with information from any relevant records.
- Continuous Performance Test (CPT). A computerized measure of attention and impulse control, used alongside interviews and rating scales, since no single test can diagnose ADHD on its own.
- Rating scales and collateral input. Standardized measures completed by you and, when relevant, parents, teachers, or partners.
- Feedback session. We walk through your results, answer questions, and provide clear recommendations, whether that’s accommodations, treatment, or next steps with a psychiatrist.

Insurance & Fees for Psychological Assessments
All testing appointments take place at our office in Durham, North Carolina. However, if preferred, the initial consultation and clinical interviews can be completed by telehealth. Total assessment costs can range from $600-$3000+ depending on the testing required.
Evaluations are out-of-network for insurance. As a courtesy, we will provide you with statements that have all the necessary information required to file a claim with your insurance carrier. We strongly encourage you to check your policy and contact your insurance carrier directly with any questions about your benefits and limitations.

STEP ONE: CONTACT US

STEP TWO: INTAKE
Once you have scheduled an appointment, you will be emailed forms to complete electronically prior to your first appointment. If we are in-network with your Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, or State Health Plan insurance benefits will be processed.
STEP THREE: FIRST SESSION
Your first appointment will be 60 minutes. In this first appointment, we will discuss what brought you in, your history, and will develop a “game plan” with you to work toward your goals.
